A shipping container that fell into the sea off Heybridge during rough weather on Saturday night has not yet been salvaged.

The container was being used as an office for a self-levelling platform conducting geotechnical surveys for the Marinus Link interconnector project, until it was tossed into the sea.

As dangerous weather continued into Sunday morning, the shipping container washed ashore near the Blythe River mouth, east of Burnie.

A Marinus Link spokesperson said the container had now settled closer to the shore near the Blythe River, and salvage efforts were ongoing.

"Ongoing poor weather has delayed efforts to recover a shipping container that was dislodged from a self-levelling platform Sunday/yesterday, due to rough weather along the coastline at Heybridge, near Burnie," the spokesperson said.

"The shipping container has now settled closer to the shore east of Blythe River, and we are working with the responsible contractors to determine the safest approach for recovery, when the weather conditions allow."

The spokesperson said the "responsible contractor" had installed security guards and safety patrollers in the area "to ensure community safety and monitor for any debris".

The platform itself will soon return to Burnie for a safety inspection.

Initially, it was intended the platform would be in place conducting geotechnical surveys for about three weeks from late May.
