SCHENECTADY — The Nott Memorial, the 145-year-old, 16-side High Victorian Gothic-style monument at the center of Union College, is undergoing repair work for the kind of problem any homeowner can understand: a leaky roof.

Three contractors with Duane Builders Inc. will spend the next three weeks erecting a massive structure of scaffolding so the repair work can get underway. The college expects the building to be closed for three months while workers fix the leaks and replace damaged plaster inside the building. Removal of the scaffolding should take three weeks at the end of the work.

The building will be off limits for the longest period since the building underwent an extensive multi-million dollar restoration that was completed in 1995, college officials said.

The 130-foot-tall structure was built to honor Eliphalet Nott, who served as Union’s president for 62 years. The building has served many purposes over the years, including use as exhibition space, a library, and a book store. During the pandemic, it's been used as a classroom space.
