PROVIDENCE, RI — After a months-long process, Rhode Island Gov. Dan McKee officially unveiled the state's new license plate design this week. The winning design is a new take on the iconic "wave" design it will replace.

Back in December, the Division of Motor Vehicles launched a public contest to design the replacement for the wave plate, which has been in use since 1996. The division received about 940 submissions from hundreds of residents and whittled them down to the five finalists announced in March.

From there, voting was turned back to the public. Of the more than 300,000 votes cast, about 52 percent were for the winning design, which came from South Kingstown resident Willem Van Lancker.

Following the release of the finalists, many wanted to know — what about the others? On Friday, that question was answered when the DMV published a PDF of all contest submissions, except for a handful simply marked "disqualified."

Most of the designs feature Rhode Island iconography, inclduing the anchor and stars featured on the state flag, Newport bridge, ocean scenes or Rhode Island Red chicken. Others were more tongue-in-check, such as the Dunkin' themed plate or a photo a pothole emblazoned with "pothole state."
